Heater Vents

This was going to be a bigger job than I thought .From a previous blog i have decided to fit Bluetooth speakers for use when the engine is off !!! .this has made a tight space even more tight .

The first issue was that there didn't seem to be enough room for the pipe coming from the screen vent to turn with out kinking or sitting on the tray which i didn't want  .

Second issue was that I wanted most of the heat to be in the footwells so had to devise some way to do this

Third issue is i have a aux socket on the passenger side so want to put fuses on the undertray for the reverse lock out the Bluetooth and the aux socket.

After brainstorming with Steve and buying a selection of fittings we (Steve !) came up with a plan . we found out by chance that the solvent plastic fitting are smaller than the push fit ,

First we cut the screen heater pipe as short as we dare .

heater screen cut down
and then a male /female bend just went in with a bit of persuasion  .

self tapping screw to hold in place

next was the floor vent again using solven fittings 45 deg this time it gave us a sweeping bend

the final challenge was to try and get as much air to the floor, idea was a equal tee on the pipe with the straight though going to the floor ,so if screen was required I can shut the floor vent .( if it works )

finished  and repeated for drivers side

Think this has gone in really well considering the room we didn't have .

DashBoard Part 4 and Bits

Its leather time , Was really dreading this part as it could go wrong very quick and is the focus point to the car .Started by laying the leather at the bottom and making sure that the bottom was going to fit
I glued the bottom in place and let it dry .
Next day came to the rest and started by stretching the leather up which seems to require 3 pairs of hands ,By good fortune had to leave for another task and came across a local furniture upholsterer, the conversation came round to my dash and a asked for any tips ,His reply was amazing ,bring it in and I'll do it for you. So I did and he only charged me beer money .

All my own work !!
Another couple of little jobs tackled  was to blank off the two unused  ports on the engine .
Jubilee clip added to stop the cap falling off
Spare air box connection
This one I tapped with a 6mm tap and then stud locked a 6mm grub screw .

Also managed to finish off the heater pipes .

just grommets required

Heater

Realised that after I had installed the heater there is another wire to go though the bulkhead to fasten on the battery It is the feed wire foe the ECU and fuel pump .
I was never totally happy with the heater pipe anyway as it seemed a bit tight in the hole and had the potential to wear though and empty the coolant so out it came to make the holes bigger .

Heater removed and holes made bigger
At the same time I noticed that the positive cable was not long enough to fit on the terminal and still look neat ,this was because I had routed it clear of the exhaust  .My solution was to fit a Battery isolating switch this comes with a removable key should I feel the need .

Battery switch fitted  and cable looks better

At the same time I thought it would be a good idea to have isolating valves on the heater circuit in case of a leak and also if I ever wanted the heater to blow cool air ( unlikely I know ) so ordered to valves from car builder solutions and happy with the fit.
the valves  have a flow arrow on so one is the wrong way round
which I will turn when I figure out which is the return pipe

Demisters

Fitted the demisters as figured that would be an easy job as the holes have already been cut out .
Not quite that easy as the hole centres didn't line up and the holes weren't wide enough drilled the holes out to 5 mm to give me a bit of room and filed the slots out and it fits two issues I am not happy with
1 the white fibreglass can be seen though the slots which stands out too much on a black car and
2the body is curved but the demisters are straight this means they fit nice at the edges tight up to the bracket but I have a gap in the middle .
demist slots look good from this angle
going to try to build up the gap with black silastic which may sort out the first problem as well

Heater

Thought I would tackle the heater fitting as my first job  .After reading Dale's blog realised that the "wings" need to be cut off .angle grinder made short work of those .
Problem then is nothing to fasten the heater with .
Again Dale's blog sourced the answer 4 6mm Rivnuts . Note heater internals need to be removed before drilling to stop the drill going into the matrix

Heater shown with the wings off and the 4 rivnuts

Heater fitted but then realised that there was no space for the pipes to connect up so first mistake
refitted after elongating the heater outlet holes and drilling new securing holes
good job its covered by the dash
heater from the passenger side showing the extent of my error
